Anti-Aging as a Prevention

Anti-Aging Medicine as a Prevention

In about 1900, mean life expectancy was 46 years. Thanks to improved living conditions and medical advances, life expectancy today is about 80 and there is an upward trend. Traditional medicine usually treats only the symptoms of diseases associated with old age. The aim of anti-aging medicine, on the other hand, is to actively prevent chronic diseases or to attenuate or decelerate existing processes.

The concepts of anti-aging medicine

There are basically three major concepts. Initially there is a review and adjustment of personal lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet, adequate exercise to compensate for our sedentary activities, training of mental fitness and the timely identification of personal risks. In addition, the body must be supported in its fight against free radicals. Such support takes the form of customised doses of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and antioxidants. These vital substances are also essential to a number of enzyme functions and to the development and maintenance of all physical structures.
The third major concept entails the substitution of natural hormones. Contrary to many preconceptions, this does not involve supplements with synthetic hormones. Quite the opposite, in fact: following a thorough examination only those hormones are replaced which appear to be deficient (substitution). Substitution takes the form of natural hormones. Many people are familiar with this, e.g. from the use of thyroid hormones. Not only are the natural hormones given at doses which are specifically customised to the individual, but they are also given in a form which can best be absorbed by the body: oestrogen and testosterone, for example, are absorbed most easily as a gel through the skin; many hormones need to be taken as tablets or capsules, however. Transdermal application of hormones enables avoidance of the often discussed, slightly increased risk of cancer.
Generally, the following hormones are substituted: DHEA, oestrogens, testosterone and melatonin. The appropriate route and dosage may help many people to considerably enhance their quality of life. Above all, diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and erectile dysfunction can be counteracted.
