At the initial examination we will first investigate the reason for your visit. We will then establish whether there have been any specific diseases in your family in order to be able to determine any possible hereditary risks. We will then take your personal medical history and establish your present medical condition, general wellbeing and any current symptoms. This will include questions on your vitality, fatigue, resistance to stress, susceptibility to infections, sleep disorders and depression, diminishing sexuality, ability to concentrate and memory, menstrual disorders, menopausal symptoms in the man or woman, but also any fluid retention, weight gain, bone and joint symptoms, and many other factors.
In addition, your weight, muscle-fat ratio and blood pressure will be measured. We will also ask you questions on your personal lifestyle: your professional and personal situation, whether you exercise regularly, your diet, alcohol consumption and/or whether you smoke and which medications you may be taking.
We will then take a blood sample to perform an exact hormone analysis in the laboratory.
At your second visit we will discuss your blood results with you and devise a suitable therapeutic concept. We may need to suggest some changes to your way of life. In addition, we may prescribe antioxidant, vitamin and mineral supplements and possibly also preparations for substituting any hormone deficits.
The first check-up will be about four weeks later. By taking measurements, the success of the therapy will be objectively assessed and the prescribed preparations adjusted and optimised in their dosage.
The chemical structure of the hormones determines how hormones can be used as therapy. Water-soluble hormones, for example, cannot be absorbed by the stomach because they would be broken down immediately in the digestive tract before they are able to exert their effect. Hence, the water-soluble hormone insulin can only be injected. Sex hormones are soluble in fat and can often be ingested without difficulty via the digestive tract. Hence the contraceptive pill is available in tablet form. Several other sex hormones, such as oestrogen, are most effective when applied through the skin (transdermally). Absorbing oestrogen via the skin also prevents any possible increase in the risk of breast cancer. Taking oestrogens in tablet form is an obsolete practice and can no longer be recommended!
Statutory health insurance schemes will normally cover the costs of the tests and treatment. In some cases not all the costs for the medications may be covered. For instance, DHEA has not yet been included in the range of services paid by the statutory health insurance schemes. We will of course advise you if you are expected to cover any of the costs yourself. Such costs are usually very reasonable and seldom exceed 50 Euros per month.
Private health insurance schemes also do not always cover the full costs. Most do not cover the costs of DHEA, for example. If in doubt, we would advise you to check with your health insurer.
